A chalet four hundred metres above the bay

Château Portofino sits on a rainforest hillside above Paraty. From one deck you look out over the Bay of Paraty, the islands of Angra dos Reis and the long green ridge of Ilha Grande — all at once.

Paraty, Angra and Ilha Grande in a single panorama

Most places on the Costa Verde give you one slice of the coast. The chalet's altitude gives you the whole sweep: the colonial rooftops and bay of Paraty below, the scattered islands of Angra dos Reis to the northeast, and Ilha Grande lying across the horizon. Sunrise comes up over the islands; by evening the bay turns gold under the deck.

The infinity pool

The pool ends where the bay begins

The pool runs to the edge of the deck, and from a chair behind it the water line and the sea line merge into one. Swim in the morning with the forest waking up around you; float at dusk while the lights of Paraty come on far below.

Built into the forest, open to the sea

The chalet stands inside the Mata Atlântica — the Atlantic rainforest that blankets these mountains — with tall glass and a broad deck pointed straight at the water. Open-plan living, suite bedrooms and that deck are the heart of it. In the morning you hear birds, and not much else.

It was placed for one reason: the view. Everything else — the quiet, the cool hillside air, the clouds that sometimes drift below you at dawn — comes with the altitude.

The town below

Paraty: a colonial port that never got paved over

Fifteen minutes downhill is one of the best-preserved colonial towns in Brazil — a UNESCO World Heritage site of whitewashed houses, colourful doorways and cobblestones laid in the gold-rush era. Around it: dozens of beaches, waterfall country, cachaça distilleries and a bay full of islands.
